Post & Core Build-up

Strengthen severely damaged teeth after a root canal. Our custom post and core build-ups provide a solid foundation for your permanent crown.

Welcome to our guide on Post & Core Restorations!

After a root canal or severe decay, a tooth often loses a significant amount of its natural structure. A post and core build-up is a critical restorative procedure used to strengthen the tooth before placing a final crown.

What is a Post and Core?

A 'post' is a small, strong rod inserted deep into the cleaned root canal. The 'core' is a custom-shaped composite material built around the top of the post. Together, they create a solid, artificial foundation (like the rebar inside a concrete pillar) that securely anchors your final dental crown.

Benefits of Post & Core Build-ups

Ensuring your restored tooth lasts a lifetime.

foundation

Structural Integrity

Provides essential internal support for teeth that have lost more than 50% of their natural crown structure.

anchor

Secure Crown Anchor

Creates a stable core that prevents your final porcelain crown from breaking or falling off during heavy chewing.

Biocompatible Materials

We use modern fiber posts or cast-metal posts that flex naturally with your tooth, reducing the risk of root fractures.

The Build-up Process

Advanced Endodontic Procedure
1

Canal Preparation

Following a successful root canal, a small amount of the filling material is removed to create a precise space for the post.

2

Post Insertion

A custom-sized post (often made of flexible glass fiber or cast metal) is securely bonded deep into the root canal.

3

Core Creation

Strong composite resin is applied around the top of the post and cured with a special light to build up the 'core' of the tooth.

4

Crown Preparation

The new solid core is shaped, an impression is taken, and a permanent, custom-made crown is placed over it.

Aftercare for Your Restoration

Once the final crown is placed over the post and core, treat it exactly like a natural tooth. Brush twice daily, floss regularly, and avoid chewing ice or hard candies that could crack the porcelain crown.

Cost of the Procedure

The cost of a post and core build-up is separate from the root canal and the final crown. It depends on the type of post used (pre-fabricated fiber vs. custom cast metal). Our team will provide a transparent estimate.

FAQs About Post & Core

Understanding dental foundations.

Does every root canal need a post? expand_more
No. A post is only necessary if the tooth has lost so much natural structure that it cannot independently hold a crown.
Does getting a post hurt? expand_more
Not at all. Since the tooth has already had a root canal, the nerve is gone, so placing the post is completely painless.
How long will it last? expand_more
A well-placed post and core, protected by a high-quality crown, can easily last a lifetime with proper oral hygiene.
