Pediatric Pulp Therapy

Gentle, fear-free root canal treatments for children. We specialize in pulpotomies and pulpectomies to save infected primary teeth and prevent future alignment issues.

Welcome to our guide on Pediatric Pulp Therapy!

Many parents wonder why we should treat a baby tooth when it's just going to fall out anyway. The truth is, primary (baby) teeth are vital for a child's speech development, chewing, and holding the correct space for the permanent teeth to erupt.

What is a Pulpotomy / Pulpectomy?

When a baby tooth has a deep cavity that reaches the nerve, we perform pulp therapy (often called a 'baby root canal'). A Pulpotomy removes only the infected top part of the nerve, while a Pulpectomy removes the entire nerve from the roots, saving the tooth from extraction.

Why Save Baby Teeth?

The importance of pediatric endodontics.

Space Maintenance

Baby teeth guide permanent teeth into their proper positions. Extracting them too early leads to crowded, crooked adult teeth.

Proper Nutrition

Healthy teeth are necessary for children to chew their food properly, ensuring they get the nutrition needed for growth.

Speech Development

Front teeth in particular are crucial for children learning to pronounce words correctly during their formative years.

Pain Relief

A deep cavity is extremely painful. Pulp therapy instantly stops the toothache and allows your child to sleep and focus in school.

The Gentle Treatment Process

Advanced Endodontic Procedure
1

Child-Friendly Anesthesia

We use specialized, gentle techniques (and sometimes nitrous oxide 'laughing gas') to ensure your child feels completely relaxed and feels no pain.

2

Removing the Decay

The decayed portion of the tooth and the infected pulp tissue are carefully and quickly removed.

3

Medication & Sealing

A soothing, antibacterial medication is placed inside the tooth to calm the remaining nerve, and the area is sealed securely.

4

Placing a Crown

To protect the fragile baby tooth until it naturally falls out, a custom stainless steel or tooth-colored pediatric crown is placed over it.

Post-Treatment Care for Kids

Your child's mouth will be numb for a few hours. Ensure they do not bite their lip or cheek. Stick to soft foods for the first day. The toothache should be completely gone, though the gums around the new crown might be slightly tender for a day or two.

Investing in Your Child's Future Smile

While extracting a baby tooth might seem cheaper initially, the resulting orthodontic problems (crooked teeth requiring braces) usually end up costing significantly more. Saving the primary tooth is the best medical and financial decision.

FAQs About Baby Root Canals

Common concerns from parents.

Will my child be scared or in pain? expand_more
Our priority is a positive experience. Dr. Sajib uses highly effective numbing techniques and a calm, reassuring approach so the procedure is painless and tear-free.
Are stainless steel crowns necessary? expand_more
Yes. A baby tooth that has had pulp therapy becomes weak. A standard filling will likely break, but a pediatric crown ensures the tooth survives until it naturally falls out.
Why not just pull the tooth out? expand_more
If you pull a back baby tooth early, the surrounding teeth will shift into the empty space, blocking the adult tooth from coming in and causing severe crowding.
