Internal Teeth Bleaching

Has a root-canaled tooth turned dark over time? Our internal bleaching technique safely whitens the tooth from the inside out, restoring your bright smile.

Welcome to our guide on Internal Teeth Bleaching!

It is a common issue for a single tooth to turn dark, gray, or brown years after it has suffered trauma or had a root canal. Standard teeth whitening treatments only work on the outside and will not fix this problem.

What is Internal Bleaching?

Also known as 'walking bleach,' internal bleaching is a specialized endodontic procedure where a whitening agent is safely placed inside the discolored, non-vital tooth. This removes the deep internal stains caused by old blood or root canal materials, whitening the tooth from the inside out.

The Internal Bleaching Process

Advanced Endodontic Procedure
1

Accessing the Tooth

A tiny opening is made in the back of the discolored tooth to access the pulp chamber where the staining is occurring.

2

Protecting the Root

A protective barrier is placed over the existing root canal filling to ensure the bleaching agent stays in the crown of the tooth.

3

Applying the Bleach

A specialized whitening paste is placed inside the tooth, and a temporary filling is used to seal it. You will 'walk' around with it for a few days.

4

Review & Final Restoration

After 3-7 days, you return. If the shade is perfect, the bleach is removed, and the access hole is permanently sealed with a white composite filling.

Aftercare for Your Whitened Tooth

Avoid heavily pigmented foods and drinks (like coffee, tea, and red wine) immediately after the permanent seal is placed to maintain the results. Internal bleaching results are long-lasting, but the tooth may gradually darken again after many years.

Cost of Internal Bleaching

Internal bleaching is a highly cost-effective cosmetic solution compared to the alternative of placing a porcelain veneer or a dental crown over the discolored tooth. Multiple sessions may be required for severe stains, which will be discussed during your consultation.

FAQs About Internal Bleaching

Understanding intrinsic stain removal.

Why do root-canaled teeth turn dark? expand_more
Discoloration is usually caused by blood pigments from the original trauma breaking down inside the dentin tubules, or sometimes from the specific materials used in older root canal therapies.
Does the procedure hurt? expand_more
No. Since the tooth has already had a root canal, the nerve is gone. The entire process is completely painless and usually doesn't even require anesthesia.
Can any dark tooth be internally bleached? expand_more
No, this procedure is exclusively for 'non-vital' teeth (teeth that have had root canals). Vital teeth with discoloration are treated with standard external whitening or veneers.
