Dental Inlays & Onlays
When a filling isn't enough but a crown is too much, our custom-milled inlays and onlays offer the perfect, conservative restoration for your tooth.
Welcome to our guide on Inlays & Onlays!
When a tooth is damaged by decay or a fracture, you want the strongest restoration possible while keeping as much of your natural tooth as you can. Dental inlays and onlays are the perfect 'middle ground' between a standard filling and a full crown.
What are Inlays and Onlays?
Also known as 'partial crowns,' these are custom-made pieces of porcelain or composite resin created in a dental lab. An inlay fits inside the cusps (bumps) of a tooth, while an onlay is larger and extends over one or more cusps. They are then permanently bonded to the tooth.

Benefits of Inlays & Onlays
The conservative approach to premium restorations.
Preserve Natural Tooth
Unlike crowns which require grinding down the entire tooth, onlays only replace the damaged portion, preserving your healthy enamel.
Superior Strength
Custom-milled porcelain is significantly stronger and more durable than standard composite fillings, especially for back teeth.
Aesthetic Match
Porcelain inlays and onlays will not discolor over time and perfectly mimic the translucency of natural teeth.
Perfect Seal
Because they are custom-made to an exact impression, they provide a superior seal against bacteria, preventing future decay.
The Inlay / Onlay Process
Preparation
The tooth is numbed, and the decay or old filling is carefully removed, leaving only strong, healthy tooth structure.
Impression
A highly accurate digital or physical impression is taken of the prepared tooth to send to our dental laboratory.
Temporary Placement
A temporary filling is placed to protect the tooth while your custom inlay or onlay is being fabricated.
Final Bonding
At your second visit, the temporary is removed, and the permanent porcelain inlay/onlay is securely bonded and polished.
Aftercare for Partial Crowns
Once bonded, an inlay or onlay acts just like a natural tooth. Practice standard oral hygiene (brushing and flossing). They are highly resistant to staining, so your smile will stay bright.

Because they require custom fabrication in a dental lab using premium porcelain, inlays and onlays cost more than standard fillings, but generally less than a full crown. They are a long-term investment in your dental health.
